Vinita Dasgupta (b. 1983) is a renowned Indian contemporary artist, celebrated for her unique and innovative techniques and mesmerising visual language. Her childhood was spent in multiple states, and she was also trained in classical music and dance, leading to a culturally dense and diverse upbringing, further enriching her art style. Today, she is one of the most acclaimed and well-known female artists in India and continues to be recognised for her contributions to contemporary pop art and women's empowerment. Vinita’s art draws inspiration from Indian mythology, folk traditions, pop culture, and her lived experiences across India, including Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Delhi.
Her signature 'rolled canvas' technique seamlessly blends traditional painting with modern experimentation, creating three-dimensional visual narratives that invite introspection and emotional connection. Her works are known for their layered complexity, blending bold imagery, intriguing textures, and broad cultural elements to explore themes of memory and identity. She chose not to enclose her inspiration within parameters set to being a one-dimensional artist. For her, being an artist is a multi-disciplined affair. Her pieces are more like pictures of a state of mind, a symphony of thoughts and her subconscious, including scraps of memory, floating impressions, thoughts and feelings that float in a disorganised mix. She is interested in using visual images along with text, sometimes using traditional media as well as photography to spark ideas.
She completed her Master’s in Fine Arts from the College of Art, New Delhi (2008) and has since been working independently with national and international galleries and curators. Her notable solo exhibitions include “Bollywood Reverie: Rustic Reveries of Bollywood” at Gallery Art Konsult in New Delhi and the Mumbai Art Fair (2011), and “My Window Shut to Open” at Gallery Art Konsult and the Metropolitan Hotel, New Delhi (2010). She has received numerous accolades, including the Art for Social Change Award from the United Nations Population Fund-India (2008), and the National Scholarship in Painting from the Ministry of Culture, HRD (2011). Additional recognition includes awards from Sahitya Kala Parishad, AIFACS, ICRC, UNESCO, and Lalit Kala Akademi. Significant group shows include “Storyteller: Stories Told and Retold” at the India Art Fair (2018), Art Bahrain (2018), and New York Art Expo (2016).
