Surita Tandon (b. 1969) is a celebrated pop art artist who grew up in Kolkata has carved a niche for herself in the contemporary art scene with her spirited colour palette, use of mixed media, and intricate embroidering. Her artistic perspective was further enriched by her worldwide travels while working as an air hostess with British Airways. She began her journey as a pop artist in 2008, exploring diverse materials such as sand, metal, beads, crystals, and acrylics in her paintings. Frequent visits to Shantiniketan and exposure to post-colonial art styles deeply influenced her, leading to the emergence of her unique art style. Inspiration from artists like Andy Warhol, Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, and Roy Lichtenstein is evident in her work, as she incorporates hints of their styles while instilling her personal touch. Her love for graphic imagery and embellishments brings focus and depth to her paintings.
Captivated by the boldness and versatility of pop art, her paintings take inspiration from famous music, film, and fashion icons. Her art often features iconic faces like Madhubala from Mughal-e-Azam, acting as an epitome of strength and ageless beauty. While her work includes Hollywood icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Kate Moss, she actively incorporates Indian subjects like Amul, reflecting her dynamic range. Tandon's works, acclaimed for their electric energy and variety of textures, are showcased across top galleries and fashion houses. Her art is a tribute to creativity, passion, and the exploration of artistic boundaries. She enjoys incorporating aspects of classic cinema, and its protagonists to bring intrigue and vitality to her work, painting these characters to life with a splash of colour on her canvas.
Surita Tandon graduated from Loreto College and earned a Master’s Degree in Mass Communication in New Delhi, further enriching her artistic foundation through workshops and training at Shantiniketan, West Bengal.
