Shuvankar Maitra (b. 1979), raised in the semi-urban landscapes of his hometown in West Bengal, India, has a profound connection to the environment that shapes his art. He captures the beauty of nature on his canvas through vibrant color strokes. By blending these colors together, he reflects his unique vision and deep respect for the natural world.
Maitra’s art is renowned for its intricate detail and innovative techniques, especially his use of microscopic circles created with rotary pens to capture nature’s essence. His landscapes, primarily featuring trees and their serene reflections in still water, evoke a profound sense of stability and tranquility. Through a semi-realistic style using acrylic, soft pastel, and ink on canvas, Maitra layers colors and light to enhance depth and mood, with tranquil pinks and dynamic dark shades emphasizing the trees' complex beauty and the changing seasons. Nature, deeply embedded in Maitra’s soul, brings him solace and joy during times of melancholy. He draws inspiration from the gentle sounds and colors of nature—like the twittering of birds and the whispering leaves—which dissolve his sorrows and infuse his work with emotional depth. His meticulous technique and vibrant strokes capture the meditative quality of trees, reflecting their steadfastness amidst change. The paintings, reminiscent of pointillism, present a luminous panorama of nature’s grandeur and subtlety, with every detail delicately shaded against rich backgrounds, creating a profoundly soothing visual experience.
Maitra, a graduate with a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata (2003), he has been actively involved in numerous group exhibitions, showcasing his work at prominent venues across Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Dubai, and Dhaka.
