G. Gangatharan (b. 1950), based in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, is renowned for his abstract oil paintings on canvas, deeply rooted in realistic drawings and figures. His artistic process involves distilling forms to create a unique visual language based on shape and color. Inspired by the vivid colors and fragrant flowers of his native temples, Gangatharan’s palette reflects the atmospheric imagery of goddesses.

His works powerfully convey the exuberant energy of India's musician communities. Through bold brush strokes and impasto techniques, he captures dynamic street scenes and religious events, emphasizing music and camaraderie. His art, marked by freedom and spontaneity, resonates with shared experiences and authenticity, encapsulating the essence of Kerala's interior. While reminiscent of Modernist styles, his approach playfully layers forms and patterns, engaging with generic narrativity and offering an external perspective. By employing blurred backgrounds and bold lines, he obscures specific locations while evoking a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere. in musical gatherings or nightclubs. Gangatharan's art resonates with a sense of relativity and familiarity, echoing the power of shared experiences. He travels across the canvas with colours and brushes in full freedom on an empty canvas. he wholeheartedly accepts whatever gets formed on the canvas as it is true and honest.

Educated at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kumbakonam, where he earned a Diploma in Fine Arts with First Class, Gangatharan served as an art professor from 1973 to 1977. His notable solo exhibitions include the Madras Regional Centre (1979) and Thanjavur Besent Hall (1980), alongside prominent group shows such as the All India National Art Exhibition organized by Lalit Kala Akademi and various art camps across India. His works are housed in significant collections, including Sri Mathi Vimala Shantham Vimal Hospital, Sri Swaminatha Swami Temple, Jawahar Hr. Sec. School, High Court Chennai, and State Bank of India Kumbakonam. Gangatharan has received accolades such as the First Prize in the Bharathidasan Painting Competition (1978) and the Tamil Nadu Ovia Nunkalai Kuzu Award (2002). Currently, he is on a nationwide tour, engaging with art lovers and sharing his artistic perspectives.
