A.Viswam (b. 1950), an eminent figure in contemporary Indian art, draws his artistic essence from the vibrant milieu of Chennai. Influenced deeply by the teachings of his mentor, the esteemed S. Dhanapal, Viswam's journey unfolds with dynamic brushstrokes that mirror his vivacious persona. His gestural abstractions capture elemental movements, choreographed with a masterful blend of colors that evoke palpable energy and emotion.
Viswam's canvases resonate with the myriad temperaments of nature, from the ethereal dance of skyscapes to the tumultuous churn of wind and waves. Each composition, an ode to profound truths, unfolds in layers of oil-on-canvas, where his sweeping diagonal, vertical, and horizontal strokes embody the very essence of his subjects. His artistry embodies a serene yet dreamlike state, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the sheer dynamism of his creations.
Graduating with accolades, his journey began with a Diploma in Painting from the Govt. College of Arts & Crafts, Kumbakonam & Madras in 1974, followed by a Post Diploma in Painting from the Government College of Art & Craft, Madras in 1978. His career is punctuated by solo exhibitions such as 'Eternal Elements' at Focus Art Gallery, Chennai 2012, and 'Space Odyssey' at Forum Art Gallery, Chennai 2010, showcasing his dynamic style.
