Shri Kumar Adhikari (b. 1987) is a New Delhi-based artist renowned for reinterpreting Mughal Miniature paintings through a contemporary lens. His work merges traditional aesthetics with the pervasive impact of modern technology, envisioning how the Mughal Durbar might appear today. Adhikari seamlessly bridges the past and present, crafting a unique and compelling narrative that reflects this dynamic interplay.
Adhikari's artworks are a distinctive fusion that explores multiple perspectives of historical and contemporary elements. His paintings vividly recreate scenes from the Mughal era, depicting durbars, processions, and ceremonies with meticulous attention to detail. Yet beneath this historical veneer lies a modern twist: traditional courtiers and royals are seen using smartphones, wearing aviator sunglasses, and participating in video calls, prompting reflection on the evolving landscape of human connection. Adhikari's use of acrylics, instead of natural pigments, further enhances the contemporary feel of his work while maintaining the intricate detailing and muted hues of Mughal Miniatures. His ability to blend historical themes with modern realities offers a thought-provoking commentary on how technology might have impacted the past.
Adhikari completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A) in painting from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, in 2011, and earned his Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) in painting from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, in 2013. He has participated in significant exhibitions such as 'Time in Transition' at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and 'Echoes of the Mughal Era' at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. His work has also been showcased at the India Art Fair and Art Dubai. Adhikari's contributions to the art world have been recognized with several awards, including the National Art Award and the Kala Ratna. His paintings are held in prestigious public and private collections, including the National Museum of Modern Art and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art.
