Kanchan Chander (b. 1957) is a distinguished multidisciplinary artist from New Delhi, celebrated for her contributions to painting, printmaking, sculpting, and academia. Her art prominently features the female form, often depicted as torsos devoid of hands, feet, or faces, transforming the body into a universal symbol of femininity. Influenced by icons such as Amrita Sher-Gil and Frida Kahlo, Chander’s works are imbued with themes of resilience and empowerment. Her artworks are characterized by bold hues, layered textures, and mixed media elements like sequins and lace, creating vibrant, celebratory portrayals of femininity.

Chander’s artistic journey traverses the themes of subjugation and empowerment. Her early works underscore oppression, while her recent pieces illuminate confident, empowered women, often depicted as deities exuding strength. The use of bold colors and intricate compositions evokes Tibetan 'thangkas', where peripheral narratives enhance a central figure. Notable works like "Incarnation of Tolerance" and the "Que Sera Sera" series poignantly offer incisive commentary on the modern Indian woman's plight, juxtaposing visions of freedom with stark realities. Her mixed media creations on canvas and paper are deeply personal yet universal, reflecting her vulnerabilities, anxieties, aspirations, and desires. By employing diverse materials and techniques, she crafts art that is both meditative and therapeutic, creating a richly textured, introspective world. Her work frequently features 'tragedy queens,' adorned with sequins and mundane materials, with each sequin applied by hand meticulously for a cathartic effect Her art delves into the psychological effects of deep-rooted misogyny  and critiques societal norms through objectification theory.

Kanchan studied at the Weisensee Kunst Hochschule in Berlin (1975)., where she began her artistic journey. She later earned a bachelor’s degree in Painting and Printmaking from the College of Art, Delhi (1981). Chander also received training in Germany and Chile. This diverse educational background has greatly influenced her artistic style and practice. She has received prestigious fellowships from the Lalit Kala Akademi and the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Her accolades include the Yuva Mahotsava, Sahitya Kala Parishad, Women's All India A.I.F.A.C.S, and recognition at the International Print Biennale in Bradford, UK. She has exhibited solo in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, as well as internationally in Nepal and Japan.
