Seema Kohli (b. 1960) is a distinguished contemporary artist based in New Delhi. With an eclectic repertoire, her art—a unique expression of her largely figurative style—spans a wide range of mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, performance, and experiential installation. A self-taught artist with over three decades of practice, Kohli draws inspiration from mythology, philosophy, iconography, and literature to craft stories that reclaim the lost feminine narrative in cultural history.

Kohli's artistic style is a captivating fusion of traditional and contemporary elements, distinguished by her masterful use of symbolism and intricate detailing. Her work is renowned for its opulent application of gold leaf and vibrant blue tones, which lend a mystical and otherworldly quality to her compositions. Kohli’s style embraces a wide range of mediums—including oils on canvas, mixed media, ceramics, and printmaking—allowing her to explore and express complex themes with depth and nuance. Her paintings are characterized by their harmonious compositions and semi-anthropomorphic figures, which merge the divine with the human in a visually enchanting manner through a contemporary lens. Kohli's approach to the female form is both reverent and dynamic, celebrating Shakti—the divine feminine energy—with a blend of sensuality and strength. Kohli’s use of time as a conceptual medium is evident in the way she constructs her visual narratives. Her pieces frequently incorporate themes of continuity, repetition, and transformation, reflecting a deep engagement with the cyclical nature of existence. Her approach enhances the thematic richness of her art, engaging in a meditative exploration of the divine and the ephemeral.

Seema Kohli, who earned a Philosophy degree from Miranda House, Delhi University (1982) and a diploma in Applied Arts from South Delhi Polytechnic (1980), boasts a distinguished 35-year career in art. She has held over 34 solo exhibitions globally, including at the Museum of Sacred Art in Brussels, Cromwell Place Galleries in London, and Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. Her work has been featured in major art fairs and biennales such as the Venice Biennale and Art Basel. Kohli’s public art installations are displayed at Delhi International Airport, Mumbai airports, the Defense Ministry, and other significant locations. Her pieces are part of prestigious collections, including the British Museum, Rubin Museum of Art, and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. Among her accolades are the Florence Biennale Gold Medal (2009) and the Lalit Kala Akademi National Award for Women (2007).
