Shuvendu Sarkar (b. 1978) is a distinguished artist based in Kolkata, India. Deeply influenced by Bengal's rich cultural heritage and his personal encounters with urban life, his work reflects a profound connection to his roots and the dynamics of contemporary society. Growing up in Chinsurah, a former Dutch colony, his art serves as a visual narrative of urban life's complexities and beauty, the interplay of light in historical settings, and a critical reflection on humanity's relationship with the natural world.
Sarkar's artistic endeavors revolve around themes of urbanization, nostalgia, social change, and the commodification of the natural world. His collections, such as "Cityscapes in Transition" and "Echoes of the Past," depict the juxtaposition of old and new through intricate details and layered textures. His works capture the colors, textures, and geometry of bygone eras, evoking a sense of nostalgia for old architecture and communal life amidst modern urbanization. Sarkar also explores the impact of human greed on nature in his works featuring animals, where he portrays the commodification of animals and their habitats.
Educated at the Government College of Art & Craft in Kolkata, Sarkar has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in India and internationally. His art has been showcased at renowned venues such as the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Art Institute of Chicago. Sarkar has received several awards for his contributions to the art world, including the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi Award. His works are held in esteemed private and public collections, cementing his reputation as a significant contemporary artist.
