N.S. Manoharan (b. 1975), based in Mumbai, India, is a distinguished visual artist whose work masterfully intertwines traditional Indian motifs with contemporary aesthetics. His art reflects a profound engagement with cultural heritage while embracing modern experiences.
Trained in watercolor, Manoharan initially focused on landscapes of Kumbakonam, employing the “Kumbakonam College style” to achieve a poetic realism through transparent layers of paint. Over time, his practice expanded to include acrylics, oils, salt technique, mixed media, and charcoal, showcasing his versatility and innovative approach. His oeuvre often features the towns of his youth, interwoven with mythological elements and deities from Indian lore. His exploration of abstract forms and dynamic color palettes is evident in his series ‘Ethereal Dynamic,’ which delves into the interplay between movement and stillness, capturing both energy and tranquility. His work is a vivid tapestry of nostalgia and cultural pride, reflecting a commitment to preserving traditional art forms while exploring new stylistic dimensions.
Manoharan completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (1982) and a Diploma in Fine Arts (1983) from Kumbakonam College of Arts, and earned a Master of Fine Arts (1999) from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai. His distinguished career includes solo exhibitions at Ethos Gallery, Bengaluru, and Parvathi Art Gallery, Chennai, as well as group shows at the India Art Fair and Art Basel Hong Kong. Notable exhibitions include ‘Remembering the Past’ at Ayya Art Gallery, Chennai, and Gnani Art Gallery, Singapore. His art has been presented at National Exhibitions in New Delhi’s Lalit Kala Academy.
