Renu Khandelwal (b. 1970) is a distinguished Mumbai-based sculptor who transitioned from a successful economics career to art over a decade ago. Her sculptures, shaped by her diverse experiences and enduring resilience, embody a semi-abstract form that delves into the profound emotional bonds of family, especially the maternal connection. Art serves as her conduit for exploring and expressing her inner self, merging subconscious energies into robust, evocative pieces.

Renu Khandelwal’s sculptural practice is defined by its powerful, clear lines and its ability to convey profound emotional narratives. Her semi-abstract forms influenced by her personal experiences, explore themes of maternal affection, gender dynamics, and human connection. Her work integrates speculative elements to reflect the evolving role of women in society and family life, blending strength with sensitivity. Her sculptures embody her diverse experiences, mental fortitude, and longing for humanity, expressed through their nuanced movements. Khandelwal's sculptures often embody a dialogue between movement and stillness, evoking a spectrum of human experiences and emotions. Inspired by devotional dance in Vrindavan and the challenges of the COVID pandemic, her pieces capture a range of sentiments from divine joy to a call for environmental stewardship and mutual support. Her works, including depictions of Lord Ganesha and themes of forgiveness and renewal, invite reflection on our impact on Earth and the need for compassion in challenging times.

Khandelwal, an accomplished artist with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Mumbai University (1991), refined her sculptural skills at Triveni Kala Sangam (2003) and deepened her art appreciation at the National Museum Institute (2004). Her extensive exhibition history highlights solo shows at Triveni Art Gallery (2003, 2005, 2007) and Taj Art Gallery (2014), alongside group exhibitions at Lalit Kala Akademi (2010, 2013) and notable international venues like the United Art Fair (2012). Her recent series, featured in 'Metanoia,' explores transformative life phases, reflecting her evolving artistic journey. Khandelwal's portfolio underscores her profound impact on contemporary sculpture and her dedication to her craft.
